Program

“Heart of Dreaming” Conference at Soapy Bore
16 – 20th  September, 2009

The Program for the “Heart of Dreaming” Conference was designed by a group, most of whom had taken part in the “Dream Sharing” Program in 2008. The group met on a monthly basis from September 2008 to September 2009 at 64 Carlton Street, Carlton, Victoria. Members of the group were Peter Hetrelezis, Jill Webb, Karen Vella, Sara Taylor, David Patman, Michelle Boyde, Kam Saraswati, and Alastair Bain. Cath McKinney. Robert Fatchen. and Richard Tanter were also members of the group for a period but were not able to take part in the Conference.

Each of the monthly sessions began with a Dreaming Matrix followed by Quickening leading to discussion and planning. The idea of the exploration of the “Heart of Dreaming” and the spirit of what we wanted to do emerged from these meetings.

Peter Hetrelezis described the spirit of the endeavour as:

Heart as metaphor of compassion and connectedness, an energy that emanates the spirit of ‘filoxenos' within the animation of being and all being.

Landscape and all that lies upon it is inseparable from this metaphorical heart, which is boundaryless in time and space.

Musing on the idea that it is movement beyond time and location and towards a union of one’s heart energy with all ‘dreaming’ that engenders the spirit for exploring the" heart of dreaming".

Members of the Melbourne group  -  Peter Hetrelezis, Jill Webb, Karen Vella, Sara Taylor, David Patman, Michelle Boyde, Kam Saraswati, and Alastair Bain – were joined by Nadine Andrew (Melbourne), Brad Freeman (Hobart), Penny Jools (Sydney), and Jeanne Magagna (London) as the participants in the Conference. There were 12 members.

The conference

Primary task

The Primary Task of the Conference was: “To explore the Heart of Dreaming”.

Events

To support work on this Primary Task various Events had been arranged and a timetable drawn up. The original conference brochure can be downloaded from the link at the bottom of this page.

Plenaries

The Conference began with a 1 hour plenary session on Tuesday evening 15th September after we reached the campsite in the Sandover riverbed at Soapy Bore, Utopia. During this Plenary there were short personal introductions; the Program and the different events were introduced, and the spirit of the endeavour; administrative arrangements concerning the campsite – catering, water for an outdoor shower (from a water truck the local Council had lent us for the Conference), outdoor toilet etc. were discussed; the background to the Conference of work that had been going on in Australia since 1989; and people’s expectations about the Conference and the experience of arriving.

There was a plenary session on Friday, 19th September to review where we were, and a Plenary at the end of the Conference on Saturday, 20th September to reflect on the experience of the Conference as a whole.

Dream Sharing Matrix

The Task of the Dream Sharing Matrix was:  “To share dreams, make associations to the dreams. And make connections between the dreams”. The dreaming, associations and connections were within the container of our Task of exploring the heart of dreaming. There were 9 one hour sessions of the Dream Sharing Matrix during the Conference. There was a Consultant pair working with the Matrix at each session, The Consultant pairs were Alastair Bain and Sara Taylor, and Jill Webb and Peter Hetrelezis.

Quickening

Following each session of the Matrix there was a quarter hour session of Quickening to reflect on what had been grown in the Matrix and the themes that were emerging. The Consultant pair for the Matrix were the Consultants to the Quickening.

Yoga

Each morning after the Dream Sharing Matrix and Quickening and before Breakfast there was a half hour session of Yoga led by Michelle Boyde and Sara Taylor.

Origins Event

There were two sessions of the Origins Event during the first two days of the Conference, This Event allowed each member to explore and share  how they got to be here at the Conference starting with their family histories before arrival in Australia, through what had occurred after arrival up to the present day. The Consultants were Alastair Bain and Michelle Boyde.

Heart of Dreaming Drawing and Sculpting

On the second day of the Conference there was a session to explore how we as individuals sensed or experienced the heart of dreaming through doing a drawing or making a sculpture from what was around us. The drawings and sculptures were then shared with members of the group. The Consultant was Jill Webb.

 Dialogues

There were two Dialogues of one hour offered during the Conference to explore ideas, concepts, and thoughts which are relevant for this work. After a 10 – 15 minute introduction by the dialogue leader there followed a collegial exploration of themes.

The first dialogue was introduced by Peter Hetrelezis on the theme of the tension between natural time and space and time as a construct.

The second dialogue was introduced by Sara Taylor on the theme  “The relationship between reification  of ‘race’ and colonization.”

Praxis

On the last day of the Conference a Praxis Event was held. Praxis explores being in action with a negotiated  task that is in line with the Conference primary task  of exploring the heart of dreaming. Members were free to work at the task in any way they chose. In practice it was a mixture of singing, chanting, reading poetry in turns, yelling, acting, and sculpting, followed by reflection. Consultant: Alastair Bain.

Exploration of Group Dynamics

Most days of the Conference there was a half hour session in the evening to explore the dynamics of the group. Consultants: David Patman and Sara Taylor.

‘O’ Event

O is Bion’s term for Ultimate Reality 'O' can be been or become but not known (see W.R. Bion  Attention and InterpretationKarnac, London, 1970). This Event provided an opportunity for us to work without memory, desire  understanding to be the O of the conjunction between our community and the task of exploring the heart of dreaming. We worked as individuals in whatever way we wished and then shared the experiences as a group. The ‘O’ Event took place on  the afternoon of the final day of the Conference.  Consultant: Alastair Bain.

Alastair Bain, Sara Taylor, Peter Hetrelezis and Jill Webb (Consultants to the Matrix) had the task of “holding the Conference in mind as a whole”. They met each day during the lunch break.

The Program timetable is reproduced below. Some changes were made to the original planning in Melbourne to adapt to the circumstances of working in the desert, the extreme heat, hot gusty wind, and being joined at times by the aboriginal children from the local Soapy Bore community. Pages of the Program were frequently blown away and what is reproduced below has been deciphered from fragments browned bt the river bed.
